A chemical peel is a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a topical chemical solution to promote exfoliation of the top layer of skin so that it peels away. Once the peeling process is complete, a fresh layer of skin that looks brighter and feels softer is revealed. The treatment is commonly used on the face, neck and chest but it can also be applied to other areas of the body for overall skin rejuvenation. A chemical peel is a safe and effective treatment and is used to treat several skin conditions such as acne, wrinkles, discoloration, rough texture, pigmentation, and other irregularities. Chemical peels are applied in varying strengths depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals. The team of medical professionals perform chemical peels at most of our offices.

Illuminize Peel®: This non-invasive, superficial chemical peel from SkinMedica increases skin glow and radiance. Vitalize Peel®: SkinMedica Vitalize Peel helps fight the effects of time, sun damage, and environmental assaults. This powerful yet non-damaging peel can take years off aging skin. This is the perfect peel for patients with mild to moderate skin conditions including fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, pigment irregularities, and acne.

• 3-6 peels are recommended, every 3-4 weeks for best results
• Light peeling lasts approximately 7 days. There is minimal-to-no redness.

You will see noticeable results after one peel and significant results after 3 to 6 peels.

Rejuvenize Peel®: The SkinMedica® Rejuvenize Peel penetrates deep into the epidermis and produces the most exfoliation. It uses an advanced formulation of peeling agents, with a built-in anti-irritant and penetration enhancer that provides controlled exfoliation of the uppermost damaged layers of the skin to reveal fresher and healthier skin. Smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

SkinMedica® Peels can be used on all types of skin and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve the look of acne scars. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and we offer three different strength chemical peels depending on your skin concerns. All treatment plans will be customized per patient by a medical professional.

Regardless of the type of peel used, the overall procedure is similar. The skin will be cleansed and then the chemical solution will be applied to the face. This process takes just a few minutes. During the chemical peel, you may feel a tingling sensation that lasts 5-10 minutes.

Downtime is dependent on the strength of the peel performed. Peeling can last up to 7 days.

SkinMedica® Peels generally last about 30 minutes. We recommend 3-6 treatments each spaced 4 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.

Immediately after the peel and up to 24 hours:

• Skin may appear slightly redder than usual for about 1 –2 hours after the treatment. If neck and décolleté are treated, the redness might last slightly longer.
• Mild edema can last up to 1 hour.
• Wait until bedtime before washing the face.
• Avoid strenuous exercise on the day of the procedure.

NEXT DAY TO 4 DAYS AFTER THE PROCEDURE:

• Skin should look normal the next day.
• Because of the superficial nature of this peel, patients should not expect to see visible peeling. Occasionally, some patients may have very minor flaking 3-4 days after the procedure.

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

1 WEEK BEFORE SKINMEDICA® PEEL:

Please avoid these products and/or procedures*:

• Retin-A®, Renova®, Differin®, Tazorac®, Finacea, Hydroquinone, Micro, Avage
• Any products containing retinol, AHA or BHA, or benzoyl peroxide

      *The use of these products/treatments prior to a SkinMedica peel may increase skin sensitivity and cause a stronger reaction

CAUTION:

• Clients who have had medical, cosmetic facial treatments or procedures (e.g., laser therapy, surgical procedures, cosmetic filler, microdermabrasion, etc.) should notify a Sona Dermatology Staff member before having the SkinMedica® Peel procedure.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

It is recommended that clients adhere to the following regimen for optimal post-peel care.

CLEANSE: Use a gentle, soap-free cleanser like SkinMedica® Sensitive Skin Cleanser or Facial Cleanser. Do not scrub and/or use a washcloth.

MOISTURIZE: While skin is peeling, patient should apply TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream™, Ultra Sheer Moisturizer, or other SkinMedica® moisturizer recommended by a medical professional as often as needed to relieve any dryness.

SUN PROTECTION: Apply Daily Physical Defense™ SPF 30+ in the AM and throughout the day. Avoid direct sunlight for at least one week.

FOUR–FIVE DAYS AFTER PROCEDURE:

• The regular use of Retin-A, alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) products or bleaching creams can be resumed after 4-5 days.

4 WEEKS AFTER PROCEDURE:

• Wait 4 weeks and until skin sensitivity resolves before having ANY OTHER FACIAL PROCEDURES, including:
  • Facials
  • Facial hair removal
  • Microdermabrasion
  • BOTOX® injections
  • Laser treatments (including laser hair removal)
  • Injectable fillers

SERIES OF PEELS: For maximum results, SkinMedica® Peels can be applied every 4-6 weeks until desired results are achieved.

SUNBURN ALERT: Extra precautions should be taken to avoid sun exposure for a minimum of 1 (one) week following the peel. It is recommended that clients use a sunscreen product with an SPF of 30 or higher.
